History

If you have an interest in conflicts, monuments, royalty, or other historical events, then the following destinations might capture your attention.

Oradour-sur-Glane

The Martyr Village of Oradour-sur-Glane has been preserved as it stood on the fateful day of June 10, 1944, when the Waffen SS Das Reich division carried out a devastating massacre during World War II. Within hours of their arrival, the town and its residents were obliterated. Today, it serves as a solemn site for contemplation of history and a stark reminder of the atrocities of wartime occupation in France

Richard the Lionheart

This renowned warrior and King of England, spent the majority of his time in France. His legacy can be traced through the Haute-Vienne, where he fought to defend his mother's homeland, Aquitaine. After his passing, he was interred at the Abbey of Fontevraud in the Loire Valley. His heart was enshrined in Rouen Cathedral, and curiously, his bowels were deposited in the Romanesque church at Châlus, signifying the conclusion of his journey in the region.

Meteor Valley

The Meteor Valley in Rochechouart was formed 210 million years ago by a meteorite impact, giving spectacular views from the town near the Château. Visitors can explore the walking meteorite trail, which leads through the village of Babaudus, past the lake, and into the town of Rochechouart. Along the way, numerous panoramas unfold, including a visit to the Château that hosts the Museum of Contemporary Art, culminating in the town centre where the Meteorite Museum is located.
